Soil Competition

Happy World Water Day!

On 22 March the world highlights the importance of water through awareness about water saving, pollution avoidance, etc. However, one of the most important aspects of the water cycle, is the soil, however it gets little attention because it is not so obvious how it relates to water. Everything we at The Compost Kitchen do is about putting organic matter back into soil because it improves the soil’s ability to hold water. If we can do this on a large scale, we can improve the water security of South Africa.

However, we need a video to explain how organic matter helps soil absorb water, so on World Water Day, we are launching a competition where you can stand a chance to win R10 000 in cash! It is as simple as creating and submitting a video which illustrates why organic soil is so important.

What we need from you

The experiment we'd like you to recreate

We have included a link below which demonstrates different soil experiments, such as soil aggregation and water infiltration. There are many examples of these kinds of videos available, however, there are no examples which incorporate South African soils and people.

All you need to do is watch these video examples and conduct your own experiment demonstrating the importance of organic soil and why we as South Africans need to change a few daily habits to improve our soil quality. You then need to record your experiment and submit your video in order to be in the running for the grand prize of R10 000 cash.

Video Criteria
  • Your video should use an experiment to demonstrate how organic matter in soil holds onto water

  • Your video may not be more than 5 minutes long

  • It may not be animated

  • An acceptable audio and visual quality need to be met

  • It should be in English

Entry Dates and Deadlines
  • Registration for the competition is from 22 March 2021 to 23 April 23h59
